Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases: A refocus on the forgotten pandemic

About

The last 2 years have witnessed the pivoting of Jamaican and global health systems to address the health burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notwithstanding the death toll and morbidity associated with COVID-19 infections, chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs), including cancers, continue to be the dominant health problem in Jamaica and internationally. These chronic diseases are often preventable through modification of health risk behaviours and exert tremendous cost burdens on the health system. The additional burden on the population requires a coordinated approach from civil society and the health team to respond effectively. Within this context, the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) will this year refocus its members, other health workers, and civil society, on the issues and possible solutions to the CNCD pandemic.

The conference encourages the participation of a wide cross-section of the health team as presented through the broad-based nature of the selected topics. Specifically, the goals of this year’s conference are:

  1. Center the CNCDs as a public health priority.

  2. Update participants on the social determinants as well as policy approaches to mitigating the effects of CNCDs in communities and nationally.

  3. Update participants on advances in the biomedical approach to the management of selected CNCDs.

  4. Update participants on enabling digital platforms for improving CNCD care.
